City of Glasgow College Campuses
Reiach and Hall Architects and Michael Laird Architects, working together in
the Glasgow Learning Quarter consortium, have been selected as the
preferred bidder for City of Glasgow College's new £228m campus
development project.
This project has seen design collaboration between Reiach and Hall
Architects and Michael Laird Architects since March 2012. The consortium,
led by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, includes FES, ARUP Scotland, Hulley and
Kirkwood, Rankin Fraser and Graven Images.
College Principle, Paul Little, noted:
"The plans reflect the College's world-class vision for the future ... commitment
to this great city ... and provide an amazing new learning environment for the
students of today and tomorrow, future-proofed for generations to come."

Civic Trust Success for Alloa and Stirling Campuses
Both the Alloa Campus and the Stirling Campus for Forth Valley College of
Further and Higher Education are included on a list of 86 projects that have
been selected to receive an Award, Commendation or Community Recognition
at the 54th Annual Civic Trust Awards to be held in March of this year.
Reiach and Hall’s entries represent two of the five successful Scottish regional
projects, assessed on their ‘architectural excellence, sustainability
credentials, accessibility for all users and positive civic contribution’, with the
judging panel noting that:
"the judging process has been rigorous and all the winners thoroughly deserve
their success."
The Civic Trust Awards scheme was established in 1959 to recognise the very
best in the built environment. Awards are given to projects of the highest
quality design, but only if they are judged to have made a positive cultural,
social or economic contribution to the local community.

Education Architect of the Year
Reiach and Hall Architects are delighted to have been named Education
Architect of the Year (6th form to university) at the Building Design Architect
of the Year Awards 2012.
The judges were enthusiastic and noted that they had a hard time with this
category. Reiach and Hall were chosen for an entry that they described as
“dramatic and well-detailed”, encompassing its Stirling campus for Forth
Valley College, the new Medical Science Building for the University of
St Andrews and an exhibition space for the University of Edinburgh.
The judges were particularly struck by the potential of the unassuming
buildings to be colonised by the students and to respond to changing
requirements over the long haul. They felt the work was “the least flashy and
the soundest architecture”, providing a blank canvas for its occupiers.
“A lot of buildings win awards and no one thinks about what they are going to
look like in 30 years’ time.”

Office Architect of the Year
Reiach and Hall Architects have been named Office Architect of the Year at
the Building Design Architect of the Year Awards.
Reiach and Hall Architects' entry was led by the recently completed Dundee
Council Offices. The judges noted that this project stood out for its
inventiveness within the tightly restricted area of office design. It was also
significant that it was built for a public sector client, and managed to pass
through the Scottish planning regulations.
The architect had boldly retained a historic industrial building while adding an
uncompromising contemporary structure.
The new building uses the old as its front door, creating a lofty loggia at the
front intended for civic use. Behind this, the new building provides seven
storeys of sustainable office space.
Meanwhile, in Glasgow, the practice has responded to the civic setting with a
public arcade for George House.

Site progress at Bannockburn
Work at our Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre continues, with the steel
frame now complete. Work on the external envelope is now in progress.

Conservation work begins at Bannockburn
Forming part of the battle of Bannockburn project for the National Trust for
Scotland, an extensive programme of conservation works has now started on
the category A listed monuments on the Borestone site.
The monuments include the 1870 Flagpole, 1957 Cairn, 1964 Rotunda and the
famous statue of King Robert the Bruce on his horse in bronze and granite.
The flagpole has been removed for major repairs – with plans to conserve and
repair the original wrought iron base onsite, with lost decorative features
reinstated. The upper pole is not original and has reached the end of its useful
life and will be replaced. The original battle axe weathervane will undergo
expert conservation repair off-site. New guywires and anchor blocks will be
introduced. All of this will mean that a substantial flag, measuring around
23’ x 11.5’ / 7m x 3.5m, can be flown once again.

BCI Award Dundee House
Reiach and Hall Architects are delighted to have won a British Construction
Industry Award for their design of Dundee House, the new civic centre and
administrative headquarters for Dundee City Council.
The BCI Awards, now in its 25th anniversary year, recognise excellence in its
broadest sense - the overall design, construction and delivery of buildings and
are highly regarded in the construction sector and the most rigorously judged
awards in the industry.
Dundee House was recognised in the £3M to £50M category which was
strongly represented by some of the industries most successful architectural
practices from across the UK - with the Judges noting that:
"this was a great example of creative re-use, symbolising the cultural and
urban ambitions of the city, delivered by a collaborative and enthusiastic
team."
Lyle Chrystie of Reiach and Hall said:
“We were lucky to have such expert client involvement, a highly motivated
design team and a main contractor at the top of their game. It is delightful to
receive such strong peer recognition in these difficult economic times.”
The project involved the integration of the existing DC Thomson print hall
(1910) into the body of a new building which makes a significant impact on the
city and provides a new public one-stop-shop on the ground floor. Galleries
and bridges cross the void and provide access into the new build offices,
which are organised in three blocks fanning out to the west. With low energy
design the focus, incorporating natural and mixed mode ventilation, a rigorous
facade was designed to minimise solar gain while maximising the use of
natural light throughout the building. The striking and graphic quality of the
building's facade has ensured that it has made a significant impact on the city.
Dundee House was built by Lend Lease with engineering consultancy from
Buro Happold and cost management by Turner and Townsend.

George House Open
Property company Redevco has launched the comprehensive Glasgow office
refurbishment, George House, by Reiach and Hall Architects.
Situated on the north side of George Square, adjacent to Queen Street
Station, the £6.9 million refurbishment of the building provides a sleek, modern
interior to meet the requirements of today’s occupier standards. With spacious
flexible floor plates of 20,000 sq. ft, flooded with natural light, the refurbishment
not only delivers on important environmental credentials [achieving a
specification of BREEAM 'Excellent' and an EPC rating of 'B'] but is combined
with fully DDA compliant contemporary entrance foyers; WCs and showers;
27 secure car parking spaces and 42 bicycle racks.

New Glasgow City College
Glasgow Learning Quarter, led by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd. is one of two
consortium teams to be shortlisted by The City of Glasgow College for the
institution’s new £200 million campus development project.
This project has seen an open collaboration between Reiach and Hall
Architects and Michael Laird Architects since March 2012; during the bidding
process our teams have united with Sir Robert McAlpine, FES, Arup Scotland
and Hulley and Kirkwood to create a detailed design dialogue which is now
set to continue until the preferred bidder is announced in early 2013.
The project is financially supported by the Scottish Funding Council and at
£200 million will be one of Scotland’s largest infrastructure projects - the
investment will see major demolition and reconstruction on the college’s city
centre campus on Cathedral Street and at its Thistle Street Riverside campus
on the opposite bank of the River Clyde.
Once planning consent is achieved, construction is expected to start in
mid-2013 with the first stages of the new campus opening in 2015 and the
final phases in 2016.
The development will create a high quality sustainable learning environment for
the college - formed in 2010 through a merger of Central College Glasgow,
Glasgow Metropolitan College and Glasgow College of Nautical Studies.
On the Cathedral Street campus, the Allan Glen Building and the Business
Learning Building will be demolished to make way for a new facility and the
Riverside campus will undergo a complete demolition including that of the
engineering and nautical buildings and halls of residence.

Reiach and Hall has made BD Magazine’s 6 strong shortlist for Office
Architect of the Year. This award was open to architects working on the
design of offices, whether new build or refurbishments of existing structures.
As the award process moves onto the next stage, the judges will now be
looking for evidence of all-round design excellence and fitness for purpose over
a body of work. Reiach and Hall chose to include their recently completed
Dundee City Council Civic Offices, Proposals for George House
Redevelopment in George Square Glasgow, The Scottish Water National
Operations Centre [currently on site] and Aurora House, a speculative
development in Clydebank [complete in 2009]. These projects either built or
otherwise demonstrate the practices capability in this specific sector.

Stirling Campus Official Opening
Scotland’s First Minister, The Rt. Hon. Alex Salmond MSP, was guest of
honour at the official opening of Forth Valley College’s new £29 million Stirling
Campus.
First Minister Alex Salmond:
"I am thrilled to be opening the hugely impressive Stirling campus of Forth
Valley College. This £29m building is now one of the most advanced college
premises in Scotland, and is set to deliver state-of-the-art facilities for the
many hundreds of students who will come here to learn.
"Forth Valley College is extremely important to the community it
serves, with in excess of 16,500 students and over 1000 apprentices.
Earlier this year, it received an outstanding report from Her Majesty's
Inspectors and, over the last 12 months, its partnership with Job Centre
Plus has seen more than a hundred people enter employment with
many others saved from redundancy.
"This new building opening comes less than a year after the
completion of the college's £19m Alloa campus, and marks yet another
stage on the transformation of the college estate in Scotland. The new
facilities I am privileged enough to open today will help the dedicated
staff of Forth Valley College carry on their life changing work with the
people of this region for decades to come."
“I thought when I opened the Alloa Campus last year that it was the most
stunning campus I had ever seen…..but the Alloa campus has now found a

The completion of both the Stirling and Alloa Campus buildings marks a new
era for Forth Valley College, transforming education and training across the
area and beyond.

funding of £13.7 million for the campus, said:

Reiach and Hall wins two Saltire Awards
The two projects entered for the Saltire Awards by Reiach and Hall Architects
have both won Awards at the 75th annual Saltire Society Housing Design
Awards, supported by the Scottish Government.
The Ackling Cook Bothy and the House at Roslin, were both recognised in the
Alterations, Renovations and Extensions category and presented with awards
by Scottish Minister for Housing and Transport, Keith Brown MSP.
This year the Saltire Society had an outstanding 70 entries in their awards
process, making it one of the largest submissions in its history. Guest Chair
Dick Cannon had said that the shortlist was beautifully conceived and
executed and that:
‘The Awards present an opportunity to raise aspirations and applaud vision
and excellence, we are fortunate this year to have a significant number of
outstanding projects confirming that design quality - committed to the
intelligent use of energy and resources - remains exceptionally high in
Scotland.’

Shortlisted joint entry to Brick Development Association Awards
Reiach and Hall Architects have been shortlisted in the 2012 Brick
Development Association Awards with a joint entry for their Forth Valley
College projects at Alloa and Stirling.
The awards acknowledge both buildings for their use of Petersen Tegl bricks
in the Worldwide Brick category. In a recent interview for the brick
development association publication, Director Neil Gillespie recognised that:
‘Reiach and Hall have been rediscovering the use of brick within our projects
within the last few years and have been drawn to the beautiful Petersen bricks
because of their richly varied colour and their wonderful haptic qualities.’
The two Further Education College buildings for Forth Valley College are
similar in their Petersen Tegl brick specifications and detailing while at the
same time reacting to two very different site conditions - Alloa is on a
demanding site close to the town centre while Stirling is located on the broad
carse of the meandering River Forth. As a result, the Alloa building is tense,
dynamically projecting between mature trees over a steep slope, opening up
dramatic views to the Ochil Hills to the north, whereas the Stirling building
follows the lead of the languid path of the river and is relaxed, expressed as an
open, generous form. In contrast to the depth of the facades at Dundee House,
both college buildings use brick (Alloa D76 and Stirling D71) as a finely
detailed durable skin that both acknowledges the taut, economic plans and
simple forms while adding texture and a familiar surface. Stirling is further
enhanced by the use of a black (D58) brick in vertical stretcher bond, giving
depth and ruggedness to a hard used portion of the front elevation.

Design and Management of Learning Environments Conference
Reiach and Hall Director Andy Law will be speaking at the national conference
for Design and Management of Learning Environments 2012.
Now in its 6th year, this series of annual conferences aims to provide estate
managers and designers with an overview of the key requirements in
developing good educational facilities.
The unique element of the events is the combination of all stages of the
education process (schools, academies, FE, HE) into one day. Thus
presentations explore how the lessons learned from one stage can inform and
benefit the design and management of the others.
Andy Law will primarily be speaking on Innovation Procurement and Design,
with reference to two of Reiach and Hall’s most recently completed
projects – the Alloa Campus and the Stirling Campus for Forth Valley
Colleges.
Following a joint procurement and design development strategy the projects
have resulted in significant saving and produced two very different buildings.

Reference Primary School Design
Reiach and Hall have been involved in reference primary school proposals in
association with the Scottish Futures Trust [SFT].
SFT, acting in partnership with East Dumbartonshire Council and
stakeholders, wanted to consider and generate a footprint for a school, which
could then be customised for use in different locations across Scotland.
As the central part of the exercise, Reiach and Hall and another architectural
practice developed proposals for a new Lairdsland Primary School in the
Southbank area of Kirkintilloch. A series of four workshops with parents,
pupils and staff from the school were held and proposals developed to RIBA
Stage C. The design, which features six enclosed outdoor classrooms and
generous shared activity spaces is within both area and cost targets set by
SFT. It would be expected to achieve BREEAM Excellent.
A number of councils have already expressed interest.

Bannockburn Visitor Centre starts on site
Work has begun on this new visitor centre, at the site of the Battle of
Bannockburn, with the ground-breaking ceremony, performed by Cabinet
Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop MSP, being held as
part of the preparations for the 700th anniversary year in 2014.
The Design Team is now joined by Mansell Construction Services Ltd to
realise the project which is a partnership between Historic Scotland and the
National Trust for Scotland.
Bannockburn Visitor Centre will incorporate state-of-the-art interpretation
space together with café, toilets, education space, shop and offices.
The new building design refers to traditional farm steadings and use of a
courtyard, but through a shift in geometry and inventive use of materials, the
new building transforms these familiar forms with an expression that is both
contemporary and dignified. The project also comprises a significant
conservation element of the existing monuments on the site.

Scottish Water National Operations Centre on site
Reiach and Hall Architects with BAM Construction have progressed plans for
Scottish Water’s new £15m National Operations Centre on site.
The project, to deliver an ultra-sustainable new build office with an intelligent
control and data centre at Stepps near Glasgow, has found its way out of the
ground with the construction of the ground, first and second floor slab.
Lorna McGregor, Scottish Water`s Head of Commercial Capital Projects,

which will host significant investment in enhanced technology to improve our
customer experience through the Intelligent Control Centre … This also

Tom Bostock awarded Honorary Fellowship
Reiach and Hall Director Tom Bostock has been awarded an Honorary
Fellowship by The University of Edinburgh in recognition of his association
with the academic activities of the School of Architecture, Edinburgh College
of Art.
The college expressed their gratitude for Tom’s input to its teaching and
research and acknowledged his continuing involvement in the Annual Update
in Architectural Management Course.
Fellow Directors and staff of Reiach and Hall join the College in extended their
congratulations on this achievement.
BCI Awards 2012
Reiach and Hall are one of 38 UK and 6 international practices to be
shortlisted in the 2012 BCI Awards (British Construction Industry Awards),
which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

Reiach and Hall Architects are absolutely delighted that the Alloa Campus for
Forth Valley College has been awarded an RIAS Award, in the inaugural year
of the Royal Institute of Architects in Scotland’s award process. These awards
are never easy to win especially given the standard this year was particularly
high.
Winning awards takes years of hard work from everyone in the client, design
and construction team and it provides great recognition of the effort involved –
not only recognising the quality of the building but more importantly the
commitment Forth Valley College is making towards improving their facilities
for education and the community.

Dundee Civic Offices RIAS and RIBA Awards 2012
Reaich and Hall Architects are absolutely delighted that Dundee House has
been awarded both an RIAS Award and an RIBA Award. These awards are
never easy to win especially given the standard this year was particularly high.
These awards not only recognise the quality of the building but more
importantly recognise the commitment Dundee City Council is making
towards improving the contemporary architectural scene.
We see Dundee House as a building that sits in the city with some dignity
and reserve. Over time we hope the building will become part of the city
landscape with the loggia particularly adding to the life of the city.
Dundee House is now eligible for the Stirling Prize.

AJ100 List 2012
Reiach and Hall have made a welcome return to this year's AJ100 list!
With 21 qualified Architects, Reiach and Hall rank equal 96th in this year's
table of top 100 UK architecture practices.
The AJ100 has been published annually since 1995 and recognises practices
according to the number of architects employed. Editor of the AJ, Christine
Murray, has congratulated this year's members noting that the ranking is a
mark of business success!

George House Phase 1 complete
The first phase of refurbishment works on George House is nearing
completion, bringing to the market almost 50,000 sq. ft. of office space across
five floors in George Square in the heart of Glasgow. The revitalisation of
George House by Redevco offers excellent access to all of Glasgow's public
transport hubs, as well as to the city's wealth of amenities.
The second phase, involving a further 40,000 sq. ft. across five floors, is
scheduled for completion in July 2012. The building has been comprehensively
refurbished to a BREEAM "Excellent" standard, and an EPC rating of 'B' is
also expected. The building can accommodate requirements from c.800 sq. ft.
to 90,000 sq. ft. in typical floors of c.10,000 sq. ft. Parking spaces for 27
vehicles will be provided, together with 42 cycle racks.

Concrete Elegance
Reiach and Hall’s director Lyle Chrystie was involved in a lecture series for
The Building Centre, London, entitled ‘Concrete Elegance’.
Lyle spoke about the recently completed Dundee House and how the new
building re-uses and reinvigorates a listed derelict industrial building, whilst
adding seven floors of modern office space for Dundee City Council’s new
administrative headquarters.
The building has a floor area of 12,500m2 and contains accommodation for
approximately 900 staff. An intricate web of corridors, light wells and glimpsed
views dissolve gradually from dark intensity to panoramic lightness as one
ascends through the building. The office spaces are subdivided and articulated
by the massive concrete spine walls, and the west facade ‘tower’ incisions
add to this framework of shifting views.

Forth Valley College has taken up residence in its new Stirling home
The new Forth Valley College, located in Stirling, is the second further
education building to be completed by Reiach and Hall Architects for Forth
Valley College in the last few months.
The campus follows the languid course of the River Forth and is expressed as
a relaxed, open, generous form. Using the same Petersen Tegl brick as in our
Dundee House (D71) but in contrast to the depth of the facades at Dundee,
the brick here acts as a thinly detailed durable skin that both acknowledges
the taut, economic plans and simple forms while adding texture and a familiar
surface to the building.
With social spaces at the heart of the scheme, providing a link between
workshops and creative industries on the one hand and academic disciplines
on the other, Forth Valley College Stirling Campus is the first public building
to address the river.

Two projects on the RIAS 2012 shortlist
The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has announced their
shortlist for the inaugural RIAS Awards 2012, with Reiach and Hall’s Forth
Valley College, Alloa and the New Administrative Headquarters for Dundee
City Council amongst the 23 buildings nominated for award review.
The judging panel for this year included RIAS President Sholto Humphries,
Dr Anne Lorne Gillies, Scottish singer, songwriter, broadcaster, author and
academic, Robert Dye of Robert Dye Associates, London and Peter Wilson,
Director of the Wood Studio at Napier University.
Sholto Humphries, President of the RIAS, commented:
“We had 71 submissions from throughout Scotland and ranging in scale from
a few thousand pounds to over £60m. This number of entries is a tremendous
vote of confidence and confirms that this new award is now the single most
important recognition of architectural achievement in Scotland.
From the shortlist, the judges will decide which schemes are worthy of an
award. While we are considering an extraordinary range of projects of different
scale and type, from a modest house extension to a multi-million pound
museum refurbishment, we will be rewarding those projects which we feel
best address the primary role of architecture that is improving people’s lives.
We are not restricted in the number of awards we make and looking at the
quality of this list, the task ahead of us will be a tough one.”

The Arena submitted for planning
Reiach and Hall have recently submitted plans to the City of Glasgow
Planning Department for a £44M hotel, restaurant and retail development as
part of the Regeneration of Glasgow’s East End.
The project follows a sports-led programme in Glasgow’s East Dalmarnock
area and includes the development of the Arena Retail and Leisure Park which
will occupy a unique location. It will be the only site with direct access to the
public piazza serving the new indoor Scottish Commonwealth Arena and the
Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, directly opposite Celtic FC and the 2014
Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village development.
The development proposals include a major new 160 bedroom Tulip Inn hotel
with extensive conference/banqueting facilities and secure underground car
parking for 147 cars; several retail and restaurant units to serve both the local
community as well as the significant amount of visitors to the area; dental and
healthcare facility; and a ground level shoppers’ car park for a further 143
vehicles.
Kevin Fawcett, the Glasgow-based developer, said:
“This exciting new retail, restaurant & hotel development has been designed
to meet the needs of both national and international athletes and visitors to
Glasgow’s new world-class sports arenas as well as the local community. The
number of visitors will be boosted by the 2014 Commonwealth Games Village
development. I am very pleased that in the current economic climate The
Arena Retail & Leisure Park development will provide over 400 new permanent

Planning for Scottish Water National Operations Centre
Reiach and Hall Architects' plans for Scottish Water’s new £15m National
Operations Centre have received full planning permission following an
application submitted in November 2011.
Together with BAM Construction, appointed as preferred bidder, Reiach and
Hall will deliver this highly sustainable new build office providing 7,300sqm of
office accommodation for 595 staff on a moorland site at Stepps, near
Glasgow.
Work is scheduled to start on site in February 2012 and completion is
expected in summer 2013.
