New Stobhill Hospital has now been officially opened by Alex Salmond, Scotland's First Minister. Quoting the First Minister, New Stobhill Hospital's design is hailed as "an act of genius in many ways".
New Stobhill Hospital represents the first of its kind to open in Scotland and re-works the entire way in which healthcare is delivered. The brief is for a true ACAD (ambulatory care and diagnostic) facility and the ethos behind the project is that the patient comes first: all medical tests and consultations will be carried out on the same day on the same site if possible, and if a medical procedure is required, a fixed appointment date is given there and then.
New Stobhill is a hospital containing over 20 departments and delivers around 80% of the work of a traditional general hospital. The award-winning design has been carefully developed to provide a supportive framework throughout the patient journey. With a deceptively simple diagram - two blocks of accommodation, the north treatment and the south consulting, connected by the public arcade - the design delivers flexible and adaptable environments. The ambition of the art, poetry and architecture is to lighten the hospital experience, to convert endured time into reflective time.
New Stobhill Hospital is the current UK winner of the ‘Award for Best Hospital Design’ in the Building Better Healthcare Awards, the hospital also holds two Roses Design Awards as ‘Best Public Building’ and ‘best of the best’ Architecture Grand Prix winning project. New Stobhill was also recognised in the RIAS Andrew Doolan ‘Best Building in Scotland’ Awards along with Reiach and Hall being credited as BD ‘Healthcare Architect of the Year’ 2009 finalist.
New Stobhill Hospital is currently shortlisted as the only healthcare project from Scotland to be shortlisted for a Civic Trust Award 2010. These results are to be announced in March.
