European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture
Reiach and Hall Architects' Pier Arts Centre in Stromness Orkney is the most northern of projects built in the UK nominated for the 2009 Mies van der Rohe European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture. Reiach and Hall are one of only 20 UK-based practices to have made the longlist which includes Brisac Gonzalez, Simon Conder Associates, Stephen Taylor Architects, Zaha Hadid, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and David Chipperfield Architects.
There were 340 projects longlisted for the 60,000 Euro prize which was launched in 1987 and is regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in international architecture. The winner was the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, Oslo, by Snøhetta.
